QEMU becomes the new hacker tool
QEMU is being used to evade our expensive defences while distributing ransomware. Why bother hiding your malware when you can wrap it in a perfectly legitimate emulator?

The Full Story
At least two different campaigns have started using the QEMU machine emulator to help their ransomware and remote access tools dodge the security tools we pay so much money for. By abusing a legitimate tool for defence evasion, these actors have made the life of your local, already exhausted IT lead just a little bit more miserable than it was this morning. Protecting ourselves would involve actually monitoring what legitimate tools are doing on our systems rather than just assuming anything with a known name is behaving itself. It is a classic move that reminds us all that any useful tool is also a potentially devastating weapon in the hands of someone who is bored and malicious.
