The Full Story
In a rare moment of proactive energy, Microsoft disrupted an illegal code-signing operation that was helping ransomware gangs mask their nasty malware. This sneaky operation affected thousands of victims in the United States, including at least twelve machines owned and operated by Redmond itself. To protect ourselves from these trusted-looking threats, we must hope Microsoft keeps hunting down these fraudulent certificates. It would also help if they managed to secure their own systems, but I suppose charity begins at home and security apparently stops there.
